Olive Growers

Hickory's RunThe growing of olive trees and the use of the fruit and oil has been part of the Mediterranean way of life and diet as far back as ancient times. Given the long history of the olive tree, it was inevitable that it would find its way to the Australian shores soon after Captain Cook arrived. After the introduction of the olive tree South Australia in the 1800`s became actively involved in the olive industry and was deemed to be one of the leading olive growing states.

Today, Australia's 150 year olive experience continues to be well supported by the use and knowledge from Mediterranean immigrants and our own domestic experience.

The Southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia has proved to be an ideal region to grow olive trees, recognising that some areas are frost free and match the Mediterranean temperatures required to maximise yields.

This is a relatively new industry to some of the 50 plus growers in the region, producing some of the finest oil flavours available in South Australia. Growers are keen to value add and pursue the quest for quality, which in time will educate and grow the domestic market. Imported olive oils and the use of vegetable oils are seen as direct competition and a continuing strong challenge for the future.

The domestic acceptance of olive oil and related products appears to be increasing based on the shelf space the large retail chains are allocating. Low cost determines that most olive oils available through the large retail chains are imported; however Australian products are certainly active in other areas of the retail scene. I would encourage you to look for Southern Flinders' olive oil products when visiting the area and taste for yourself the quality and variety of flavours being produced.
