Local Government
The Southern Flinders Ranges Region is serviced by three Local Government Councils. Each Council is responsible for a specific area.
The three Councils are the Port Pirie Regional Council, The District Council of Mount Remarkable and the Northern Areas Council. Local Government Councils are made up of democratically elected members and with staff support and in partnership with their local communities they manage community infrastructure and provide services to people who live, work, and visit each Council area.

DC of Mount Remarkable
If you need to come into the Mount Remarkable Council office, you'll find us next to the Town Hall in Melrose.
Office hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30 am until 5.30 pm.
The township of Melrose is at the foot of Mount Remarkable and is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. Wherever you turn in Melrose, you get a sense of the history of the town.
The former Police Station and Court House is now home to the National Trust Museum, a fascinating place to visit next time you're in Melrose.
Northern Areas Council
The Northern Areas Council is located in an area about 200km north of Adelaide and 60 km east of Port Pirie with Peterborough to our north and Clare to the south of the district.
The region is also experiencing strong housing demand as people are choosing to relocate to vibrant rural districts characterized by stately 'turn-of-the-century' homes.
The Northern Areas Council district is a strategic link for visitors commuting to or from the popular Flinders Ranges and can cater for drive through tourists with excellent caravan parks at Gladstone, Laura and Jamestown and accommodation at hotels in each town. Council's district is also adjacent to the major east-west road link from Sydney to Perth and includes a section of the Indian Pacific rail line.
Port Pirie Regional Council
The Port Pirie Regional Council region nestles between the sheltered waters of the Spencer Gulf and the magnificent Southern Flinders Ranges.
The Council area encompasses the rural towns of Crystal Brook, Koolunga, Redhill, Napperby, Nelshaby, Wandearah, Warnertown, Merriton, Mundoora and the City of Port Pirie.
The diverse nature of the region lends itself to a wide cross section of economic, social and sporting activities and lifestyle opportunities for residents, tourists and business interests. The rural sector is a high agricultural contributor to the State and the gross national product. The city area of Port Pirie is a commercial centre and port, with an industrial history centered on the Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, the world's largest lead smelter. The Smelter has a history of over 100 years producing and exporting lead, zinc and silver.
